Kung Fu Panda 4 Full Movie Review
Kung Fu Panda 4 sees Jack Black, James Hong, Dustin Hoffman and Ian McShane reprise their respective roles with cast additions that include Awkwafina, Ke Huy Quan, and Viola Davis. In the film, Po (Black) teams up with fox bandit Zhen (Awkwafina) to defeat the evil sorceress, the Chameleon (Davis), while trying to find his successor as the new Dragon Warrior.
After two films proving that he is worthy enough to be the Dragon Warrior, Po has established himself as a formidable warrior and relishes his role of being the hero of the Valley of the Peace – but now, he must assume the role of being the valley’s spiritual leader. But Po isn’t willing to hand over the Staff of Wisdom and his mantle so easily, choosing to bust ass rather than embrace the serenity of inner peace – until he hears about the return of old foe Tai Lung (Ian McShane). Seeing this as another chance to prove himself as the Dragon Warrior, Po teams up with Zhen, a thief with fast fingers and a smart mouth, to investigate.
With Po wanting to prove that he is someone he isn’t, it rings the same bell as the rest of the franchise. From the dumpling-loving Po to the crafty Zhen, the latest instalment rings a similar premise of embracing one’s identity rather than living in the shadows of others. Even the villainous Chameleon, who resents the fact that she didn’t have the opportunity to learn kung fu, uses her magical skills to rule Juniper City and strike fear into local gang members. This, along with the villainess’s need for power, does feel weary at times, especially when there is little new material on offer but ultimately delivers comfortable and reliable entertainment, thanks to director Mike Mitchell’s (Trolls, The Lego Movie 2) experience with family-friendly films.
Cast-wise, it is more streamlined as the franchise’s Furious Five is mostly MIA but Kung Fu Panda 4 nicely retains its angle of casting Asian actors, with Awkwafina, Ronny Chieng and Ke Huy Quan (as Sunda pangolin Han) bringing range to the proceedings. Awkwafina and Davis, in particular, respectively bring cheek and no-nonsense grandeur that bring a nice contrast to Jack Black’s slapstick. Meanwhile, the action seems to have gone down a gear to overly focus on Po and Zhen’s chemistry, as well as accommodate the franchise’s potential new direction.
The future of Kung Fu Panda is unclear and the latest instalment shows signs of fatigue via its overfamiliar premise and lacklustre character development but if you are looking for something safe to entertain families, look no further.
